Adimec provided the high-resolution cameras for the orbital boom sensor system of the Discovery Space Shuttle mission STS-121, July 4-17, 2006, which succeeded in testing shuttle safety improvements and produced never-before-seen, detailed images of the shuttle during and after launch. Multiple cameras were coupled to a Pleora iPort IP engine, enabling the crew to control them while inspecting the shuttle’s thermal protection system. The images were analyzed for details such as filler between tiles, to assess potential damage. Selection of the cameras required that the products be COTS, and have enough durability and performance to provide flawless images in the void of space and on the space shuttle, the most complex machine ever built.
