Adimec announced today that Space Shuttle DiscoveryMission STS-116 was the third shuttle mission to use Adimec’s advanced camera technology as part of an imaging system to ensure shuttle safety. Adimec provided the high-resolution cameras which were part of the orbital boom sensor system (OBSS) of the Space Shuttle Discovery mission STS-121, the Space Shuttle Atlantis mission STS-115,
and now the Space Shuttle Discovery mission STS-116.

"Adimec is pleased to see the third NASA Space Shuttle include our cameras with their critical inspection system that allows for re-entry clearance and the safe return of the shuttle and crew," said Jay Rice, Vice President of Sales & Marketing for Adimec in North America.

Adimec provided multiple high-performance cameras to NASA which were coupled to a Pleora iPort IP™ engine. This enables high-resolution images to be streamed to a
laptop inside the shuttle over a standard Ethernet link. The imaging system is mounted at the end of the space shuttle’s 50-foot robotic arm and is controlled by the crew.
NASA’s OBSS system on this robotic arm is used to inspect and measure defects in the shuttle’s outer ‘skin,’ particularly in the heat tile area, the reinforced carbon-carbon (RCC) wing, and the nose cap.

For STS-121, high-resolution images from the Adimec camera system were analyzed
for fine details, such as the gap filler between tiles, to determine any potential risks to the shuttle safety. For both STS-115 and STS-116, Adimec’s cameras were used
during the flight day 2 and flight day 11 surveys of the RCC wing leading edge and nose cap surfaces to confirm that no damage was present.

NASA needed high-performance cameras with enough durability and performance to provide flawless images in the void of space and on the space shuttle, the most
complex machine ever built. "We were happy to be selected as the high-resolution camera supplier for NASA’s advanced imaging system and to have our product performance satisfy the rigorous requirements of NASA" said Jay Rice. The Space Shuttle Discovery and its crew landed on December 22, 2006 after a 12-day, 5.3 million-mile journey in space. The mission succeeded in reconfiguring the
International Space Station’s power and cooling systems from a temporary setup to a permanent mode and adding a new piece to the station’s backbone.
